MCI: Mild cognitive impairment causes a slight but noticeable and measurable decline in cogni- tive abilities, including memory and thinking skills. MCI increases the risk of developing Alzheimer’s or other dementia. OASI: Old-age Survivor’s Insurance is also known as Social Security retirement. Based on social insurance principles, the program provides monthly benefits designed to replace, in part, the loss of income due to retirement, disability, or death. Coverage is nearly universal: About 96% of the jobs in the United States are covered. Workers finance the program through a payroll tax that is levied under the Federal Insurance and Self- Employment Contribution Acts (FICA and SECA). OOPM: Out-of-pocket medical expenses en- compass a range of costs not covered by medical insurance. SES: Socioeconomic status is an economic and sociological measure of a person’s work experi- ence and of an individual’s or family’s economic and social position in relation to others, based on income, education, and occupation. SSDI: Social Security Disability Insurance is tied to the Social Security retirement program but is for workers who become disabled before retirement age. Only workers who have worked and paid Social Security taxes are insured by the SSDI program. VaD: Vascular dementia. Alzheimer’s disease results from the breakdown of nerve cells in the brain.
