Researcher Contribution: Tax Calculations for HRS 2000 & 2002
June 27, 2005
Susann Rohwedder, Michael Hurd, Philip Pantoja, and Patty StClair at RAND have used the NBER-Internet TAXSIM calculator, version 5.1, to compute federal, state, and FICA taxes for respondents to HRS 2000 and HRS 2002. The data come in two files, one for each of the two HRS waves. For details on the tax calculations performed by TAXSIM we refer the interested reader to the TAXSIM website (http://www.nber.org/~taxsim/).
For confidentiality reasons, tax calculations are performed 51 times for each respondent, one for each state. The data files thus contain 51 records for each HRS respondent who participated in the specific wave of the survey. For example, there were 19,580 respondents in HRS 2000. The corresponding file with the tax calculations has 998,580 observations (=19,580*51). Users of restricted geocodes can select for each respondent the one for the state the respondent lived in at the time of the interview.
The data set may be downloaded from the HRS Public File Download Area. Registration (free) is required for access.
