AHEAD Respondent and Deceased Spouse Earnings and Benefits Data (v1.0)

AHEAD Respondent and Deceased Spouse Earnings and Benefits Data are now available to researchers who qualify for access to restricted data.

This release includes information derived from RDSI, Covered Earnings and SSI records of Respondents who signed consent forms in AHEAD 1993 (Wave 1) or AHEAD 1995 (Wave 2). The release contains the following file types for both Respondents and Deceased Spouses:

  • RDSI Benefits: The RDSI payment data files (Respondent N=4650, Deceased Spouse N=255) cover the period from January 1962 through December 1992. All fields are rounded to the nearest $10. Data items include Primary Insurance Amount, PIA Reduction Amount, Monthly Benefit Paid, Monthly Benefit Amount, Monthly Benefit Credited, Family Maximum, and other miscellaneous program and demographic information variables.
  • Covered Earnings: The Covered Earnings files (Respondent N=255, Deceased Spouse N=365) contain 1951-1992 annual earnings data, and include both Covered Earnings Amounts (rounded to the nearest $100 per year and top-coded) and Quarters of Covered Earnings. The files also contain aggregated Earnings amounts for 1937 through 1950 (rounded to the nearest $100 and top-coded).
  • SSI Benefits: Supplemental Security Income files (Respondent N=567, Deceased Spouse N=33) contain benefit information for the period January 1974 through December 1992. All fields are rounded to the nearest $10. Data items include: Monthly Federal Assistance Amount, Monthly Federal Money Amount (payment), State Supplementation Amount (payment), Current Amount of State Supplementation, and other program and demographic information variables

AHEAD Respondent Earnings and Benefits files are only available through special agreement with the Health and Retirement Study. New users should visit the HRS Restricted Data Web site for details on how to apply for and obtain restricted data. Researchers who currently have permission to use HRS Earnings and Benefits data should submit a request in writing in order to obtain the new products.
